August 5, 2016

Dear Mass Library System members and members of the Massachusetts library community,

MLS is hosting town hall meetings to hear your reactions and discuss our new Strategic Plan 2017-2019.

The MLS Executive Board will review and finalize the draft Strategic Plan-2017-2019 at its August 15th meeting. We will then present this draft for review to you, the Massachusetts library community and we welcome your comments and suggestions. Please join us at a Town Hall Meeting to share your thoughts and perspective and make your voice heard. RSVP here

Throughout this process we have heard three clear messages: 1) MLS responsiveness to its members and member participation in MLS are key; 2) Marketing and advocacy are vitally important for the future of libraries; and 3) Change is a continuous theme for all libraries. These repeated concerns and issues have are now MLS’ strategic goals for 2017-2019. In addition five overarching themes have emerged to guide our direction and actions: 1) Strengthen the Massachusetts library community; 2) Use our resources efficiently for the best sustainable outcomes; 3) Provide opportunities for MLS’ staff success; 4) Social justice is an imperative for libraries and the MLS; and 5) Align actions with MBLC.

We’ve scheduled a series of Town Hall Meetings to present and discuss the plan with members and stakeholders in late August and early Sept. Please join us at one of these in-person or online events–RSVP here for an event in Pittsfield on 8/17, Northampton on 8/18, Middleton on 8/19, Plymouth 8/22, Boston on 8/26, Marlborough on 9/7, and online on 8/23 and 9/12.

The membership is invited to endorse the plan at our Nov. 7th Annual Meeting at the College of the Holy Cross. Keynote address by John Palfrey.
