LIBRARY ASSISTANT - BOOKMOBILE DRIVER
Definition
Routine
administrative and direct service work assisting with the circulation of
library bookmobile materials; responsible for operation and maintenance of
the bookmobile; all other related work, as required.
Supervision
Work is
performed under the direct supervision of the Library Director.
Performs routine and standardized duties, according to prescribed rules and
procedures, requiring attention to detail and accuracy.
Work Environment
Work
involves slight risk of physical injury and exposure to noise; workload is
subject to seasonal and weather-related fluctuations; regular schedule
requires evening work.
The employee operates standard office and library equipment and the bookmobile.
Duties require constant interaction with library patrons, community organizations, and mechanics and require excellent customer service skills.
The employee has access to confidential patron records.
Administrative errors are easily detected and corrected, but could result in
interruption of service; errors in operation of the vehicle could result in
personal injury, injury to others, damage to equipment and monetary loss.
Essential Duties and
Responsibilities
The
essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as

Operates bookmobile and inspects vehicle and ensures proper maintenance on a daily basis; performs basic maintenance.
Stocks and loads bookmobile with necessary materials; unloads and returns materials.
Ensures proper operation of computers and disks.
Assists patrons in the use of library resources; charges and discharges materials; provides basic direction, information and instruction; provides basic information referral and services, providing factual information, direction, or assistance with locating materials; searches computer files; collects and records fines for overdue materials; updates patron information and resolves problems.
Oversees the work of library pages, as needed.
Performs circulation desk duties at the library, as needed.
Performs similar or related work, as required, or as situation dictates.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
High school
diploma; one year of work experience; experience working with the public
preferred; experience in vehicle operation and maintenance; or an equivalent
combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Knowledge of
library policies and procedures, including automated circulation systems and
information technology. Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System.
Working knowledge of automotive mechanics.
Ability to interact tactfully and appropriately with library patrons. Ability to work with detail and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to learn computer operations and related library databases. Ability to operate library equipment.
Excellent driving skills. Customer service skills. Oral and written communication skills. Computer skills.
Additional Requirements
Valid Class B
CDL
Physical Requirements
Minimal
physical effort is required to perform most duties. The employee is frequently
required to stand, walk, speak, hear, use hands to operate equipment, climb,
stoop, reach with hands and arms, and lift items weighing up to 30 pounds.
Vision requirements include the ability to read routine documents and view a
computer monitor. Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
