In October 2024, Yarmouth Town Libraries partnered with two mid-Cape libraries and local community organizations to host the inaugural Masquerade Ball. This enchanting evening provided young adults with a magical experience, encouraging them to embrace their authentic selves behind elegant masks. The event celebrated unity and acceptance.
Youth Services Librarian Mindy Herington shares more in a Q&A below!
How did you come up with the idea to host the Masquerade Ball?
The Masquerade Ball emerged from a blend of necessity and community-driven inspiration. In 2023, Yarmouth Town Libraries collaborated with over 40 Massachusetts libraries to host a Zoom program for teens featuring Giganta Smalls called, “Dishing Out Drag.” While many people welcomed the event, there was local community backlash after being misrepresented on a nationally-syndicated radio program. This experience opened new opportunities for collaboration with Cape Cod Pride and other local organizations. Pam Washburn, president of Cape Cod Pride, visited the children’s room at South Yarmouth Library and casually asked if we were committed to hosting a prom. She followed up by securing a grant to get us started. Our first sponsor was the Boston Chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
We attempted our first Ball in May 2024. Rushing the planning process resulted in a smaller turnout than anticipated, but the 10 teens who attended had an incredible time. Their joy and feedback motivated us to organize a larger, more polished event—leading to the October 2024 Masquerade Ball.
Tell us about the event.
On Saturday, October 26, the West Yarmouth Library transformed into a vibrant, magical space welcoming young adults from across Cape Cod, the Islands, and beyond. 56 teens attended, including a group of 12 who arrived via bus coordinated by their school administrators and transportation department.
Preparations began early in the morning and took approximately eight hours. Computers were removed from the floor, book displays were tucked away, and toys, desks, and tables were temporarily stored. Dusty bookshelves were draped with fabric, while streamers and lights cascaded from the ceilings. A giant high heel took center stage in the Children’s Area, adding a whimsical flair to the decor.
As guests arrived, they were greeted by a dazzling display of lights, the Marjorie Lynne Art Bus on loan from the Cotuit Art Center, and a tent filled with steaming food for the guests to enjoy outside beneath the stars. Inside, DJ Kris K welcomed the teens from behind the circulation desk, and an open dance floor beckoned. Tucked between the bookshelves were dessert tables, a glitter tattoo station, and cozy hangout spots.
The atmosphere buzzed with excitement and laughter. Attendees wore everything from glamorous gowns to creative costumes: a young couple dressed as royalty, alongside a Squishmallow, Beast Boy, and even a gothic bride carrying a faux blood bag. The evening was filled with magic, leaving unforgettable memories for all who attended.
What was involved with planning and organizing the event?
Planning the Masquerade Ball took eight months of careful coordination. To make this event successful the most important part was making sure the teens we were inviting would be able to make it. One of the biggest challenges was ensuring the event wouldn’t conflict with school Homecoming dances, which meant reviewing public school calendars across the region.
We also reflected on the resources available for queer youth in the area. We asked: What local support existed? Where were the school Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) groups? This exploration led us to collaborate with WeThrive, PFlag, and Cape Cod Pride. Their connections to school leaders, vendors, and artists were invaluable.
As interest grew, it became evident that our initial ball was evolving into a large-scale celebration. This raised the questions: Did we have sufficient food, space, and enough glitter? The Town of Yarmouth and the library community played a crucial role in addressing these needs. With a limited budget, we relied heavily on local partnerships. The Hyannis Public Library, Centerville Public Library, and numerous local businesses rallied to support the event. The Yarmouth Library Associations, Town of Yarmouth Select Board, and Yarmouth Rotary Club demonstrated unwavering commitment to Cape Cod youth, helping us secure permits and the additional funding needed for a tent and professional photographer.
The library holds a cherished place in Yarmouth, and the community takes pride in the dedication of library staff. I am fortunate to work alongside incredibly generous and passionate individuals whose hard work consistently earns the appreciation of our patrons and neighbors. Their unwavering commitment makes it easy to garner support when it is needed.
A heartfelt thank you to our community partners: The Family Table Collaborative, Cape Cod Macarons, Rebecca Corliss Photography, Cape Cod Party Rentals, and Locked on Balloons. Your contributions brought this magical evening to life.
What feedback did you receive from teens and your project partners?
When we asked the youth if we should host the event again, a loud cheer erupted from the crowd. The teens even let us take a photo to share with our sponsors. Teens expressed gratitude for a safe, welcoming space where they felt seen and celebrated. Partners praised the event’s inclusivity and expressed interest in continuing similar collaborations.
What advice would you offer to other libraries interested in hosting a masquerade ball?
Collaboration is key. Most libraries on Cape Cod are small, but by working together, we can expand our reach and impact. Engage with community organizations, leverage local talent, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. It was heartwarming to see how much people are willing to give of themselves when it comes to supporting our youth.
Any other thoughts you would like to share?
If even one child feels accepted and valued, the effort is worth it. While large audiences are wonderful, the impact on a single young person can be just as powerful. As library workers, we have the opportunity to foster community and create lasting memories.
