Dear Massachusetts library workers,

Happy National Library Workers Day!

On behalf of the Massachusetts Library System (MLS), I thank you for your dedication to our state’s residents and our profession’s core values. Today is a celebration of you, so I want to take the opportunity to highlight your vital work throughout the state.

Our libraries function so effectively because every worker is passionate about serving their patrons. Every day, you provide equitable access to multilingual materials and resources for everyone who seeks to learn, grow, connect, and engage.

Promoting intellectual freedom is a cornerstone of our country’s democracy. Despite the increase in book bans and challenges, you continue to preserve this fundamental right. Thank you for ensuring people’s freedom to read the materials they want and explore the information they seek.

Our state’s libraries reflect the communities they serve. Public, school, academic, and special libraries meet the unique needs of their patrons. Because of this, our state is home to diverse libraries bolstered by their committed staff.

These past few months have been especially challenging for our profession. Surely, uncertain and stressful times await. Know that your patrons appreciate you and your work.

Almost 1,000 people shared their love on the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) Empowered by Libraries campaign. I encourage you to take a moment to see just how appreciated your work is by the communities you serve.

Thank you for everything you do!

Sincerely,

Sarah Sogigian
Executive Director
